Exposure Photography show at Mix, Meet and Mogul

I've always wondered what that mix, meet and mogul place has been about down near Sunset and Griffith Park Blovd (where the Silverlake farmers market is every Saturday). Here's a neat event that is going on tonight and every friday through March.

"Exposure finds band/music event photographers Koga, Benjamin Hoste and Simon Cardoza showcasing their best work every Friday for an entire month at Meet, Mix, Mogul in Griffith Park. Although there will be live performances from some of the fabulous bands they've shot, consider the event to be the photographers' equivalent of a residency.

Meet, Mix, Mogul is located at 1519 Griffith Park Boulevard. The weekly event begins this Friday, February 27th at 7:30 PM. It is free before 8:45 PM and $5 thereafter."

The Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd, 213.413.8200) map
$8

"The Echo hosts an evening of Mardi Gras-themed revelry with four raucous local acts. Ozomatli's GRAMMY-winning Wil-Dog Abers steps it up with the lively, rhythmic Mentiritas, having poached session musicians from Beastie Boys, Cava, and Plastilina Mosh. Ollin, comprised of identical twins Randy and Scott Rodarte, fuse punk rock with Mexican folk, throwing in Fat Tuesday-inspired dance music to keep up with the theme. La Santa Cecilia hybridize various forms of world music for a classically Angeleno vibe, while the wild, 20-piece Killsonic cap things off with their eclectic and enjoyably demented marching-band tunes. - Tanja Laden"

A little something downtown- FIDM Oscar Costume Exhibit

This is a few minutes drive from Silverlake in Downtown, but it's one of LA's hidden gems that goes on every year for all you costuming nuts out there-

Every year at FIDM downtown, they put on a free exhibit of TONS of beautiful, lavish costumes from the previous years' films, plus last year's oscar winner for Best Costume. It only goes on for about a month and a half around Oscar time, and alas, no photography is permitted (officially), but it's so inspring to see some of these costumes up close and in person.

"The 17th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design opens at FIDM on Wednesday, January 28, and runs through Sunday, March 29. The FIDM Musem & Galleries has costumes from Best Costume Design nominees "The Curious Case of Bejamin Button," "The Duchess," and "Milk." The exhibition is free to the public and features amazing costumes from some of 2008's best films, including the Academy Award®-winning "Elizabeth: The Golden Age."

Cafe Tropicale type of morning

Due to lack of groceries in the house this morning, we made a quick stop by way of Cafe Tropicale to pick up a chocolate croissant and breakfast sandwich, with a side of coffee and hot chocolate. I love how their hot chocolate has cinnamon in it!

Seriously, though, if you don't get there super early in the morning, good luck getting a croissant or croissant sandwich. They are always out! Sad. However, they usually have chocolate croissants or their awesome guava cheese phyllo things.

Also, there was a strange "Welcome to Arizona!" type advertisement with a cut-out to put your head (to look like you were white water rafting) over by Tom's burgers. Fascinating. Must check out later.

Anyways, swung by Bailers Hardware and art store for some quick painting supplies- those two places are the best, seriously! The guys at Bailers Hardware totally know me I've been in there so often recently. Of course, could be because I'm a cute blonde. Hrm. Either one. But I love still having a neighborhood hardware store to go to and ask people for help. Feels so much nicer than having to go to Home Depot or the such.  (same goes for the Art Store- their canvases are SO cheap. I was drooling over their large scale canvases... planning on an art show later this spring- checking out prices!)

And just to top the afternoon off, saw a brilliant double rainbow over Glendale as I was heading out towards the 5 from Los Feliz. GORGEOUS!

Lazy Sunday, busy weekend!

Quick update on Friday night- after a quick dinner at Alegria on Sunset , we went out and checked out Secret Headquarter's BEASTS Show , which was great! Got there at 10 (which was the closing time- was afraid it'd be over), but the place was packed and had people milling around and talking for at least another 45 minutes.  Also grabbed a copy of Robert Goodin 's latest comic (The Man Who Loved Breasts)- alas, I missed his Monsters opening at SH the weekend before, but I got to say hi to him friday night!

Headed on over to Thinkspace to catch the tail end of Amy Crehore's Dreamgirls and Ukes exhibit , which was beautiful. Definitely worth checking out- her stuff is just exquisite. The hand painted ukeleles were gorgeous in their variety of makes and themes, and the collection of paintings complemented the ukes very well.

Today was a wonderful post-Valentines day Sunday!  (We really celebrated Valentines day today, since actual valentine's day was spent sick in bed with migrane : P ). We meandered down to Madame Matisse , where we gorged on their specials of "Chef's Revenge" (plate full of ... everything? scrambled together) and.. get this... FRIED waffle with tres leche glaze.

That was a dessert, people, not breakfast. It was like eating funnel cake. With a tres leche glaze. Divine! Soo amazingly good.

For dinner, we got dressed up for no real reason and went out to our perennial favorite, Gingergrass .  Always a wait at that place, no matter what time or day you get there! Had champagne with blood orange and lychee, new zealand mussels with tarot fries, and (the best part!) vietnamese coffee ice cream. If you haven't tried the coffee ice cream there, DO! It's so good you want to lick the bowl.

Goldmine Shithouse Silkscreening party 2/13

Via Thrillist Los Angeles
(Sign up for their emails here!)

Goldmine Shithouse
Feb 8-21 at Nomad: 1993 Blake Ave, Silverlake; 213.765.0756

Most squatters just fill their adopted space with hypodermic needles, feral animals, and their feral poop. To hang with some squatters furnishing their temporary locale with art, make friends with Goldmine Shithouse.

A five-year-old, three-man avant-art collective that's done their highly conceptual shows in NY, Berlin, and SF, Goldmine'll be shacking up at a 6,000sq ft studio/gallery starting Sunday, working 24/7 'til Feb 21, and letting the public drop in whenever to scope the art's progress/dip the hands of exhausted napping creatives into warm water. The end result of the work's uncharted, but the huge space'll provide their first chance to use large-form photos & silkscreens to abet their bizarrely disjointed mixed-media art; former examples include a Marie Antoinette-looking illustration holding a house with a clipper ship perched atop it, and a wall w/ thumb-tacked scraps of paper saying "smoke it down to the filter" and "lefthanded toilet", your new stock excuse when you don't lift the seat.

Though visits are encouraged throughout, there'll be a silkscreening party on Feb 13, with free beer and booze, and $5 silkscreens of Goldmine prints on anything you bring by, from tees, to comforters, to granny panties!

When the show's over, the Goldmine'll also host a more-standard reception at Nomad, featuring completed pieces, though it's really up to the critics to decide whether it's a a smashing success or just a giant pile of feral poop.

Check out the art and more info at GoldmineShithouse.com
